Our Story

Dance Hampton Roads began with a simple belief: that movement is one of our most powerful forms of human expression, and that every community deserves to see its stories celebrated. What started as an online platform offering dance classes has evolved into something even more meaningful—a digital home for the vibrant, diverse, and endlessly creative dance scene that pulses through Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Newport News, and beyond.

When we first launched, we were focused on bringing dance instruction directly to your living room. But as we connected with our community, we realized something important: Hampton Roads doesn’t need another generic dance tutorial site. What it needs is a place that honors the incredible talent, creativity, and cultural richness that already exists in our studios, community centers, street corners, and stages.

Our Mission

Today, Dance Hampton Roads serves as the region’s premier storytelling platform for dance culture. We believe that behind every pirouette, every freestyle battle, every first recital, and every decades-long teaching career lies a story worth sharing. Our mission is to celebrate the dancers, choreographers, instructors, and movement artists who make Hampton Roads a place where rhythm and community intersect.

We’re here to shine a spotlight on the teenager perfecting their technique in Virginia Beach, the ballroom community creating safe spaces in Norfolk, the hip-hop crew that started in a Portsmouth parking lot, and the classical instructor who’s been shaping young dancers for thirty years. We document the flash mobs that bring joy to the Boardwalk, the cultural traditions that connect us to our roots, and the innovative fusion styles that push boundaries and create new possibilities.
